Sankalpa (Sanskrit: संकल्प) is a powerful concept in yogic and spiritual traditions, especially in practices like Yoga Nidra and meditation. It translates loosely as a “resolve” or “intention,” but it holds a deeper spiritual and psychological significance.
What Is Sankalpa?
At its essence, sankalpa is a heartfelt vow or determination made with full sincerity and commitment. Unlike ordinary goals or resolutions, a sankalpa:
Aligns with your higher purpose (dharma)
Emerges from deep within, not imposed externally
Harnesses the power of the subconscious mind
Is often phrased in the present tense, as if already true

When and How to Use It
Yoga Nidra: Sankalpa is traditionally set at the beginning and end of Yoga Nidra sessions, when the mind is deeply receptive.
Meditation: Repeating your sankalpa at the end of meditation helps anchor it in your awareness.
Daily life: It can be reaffirmed silently during quiet moments, especially when facing challenges or distractions.
