The Yamas & Niyamas are ethical guidelines in yoga, forming the foundation of a yogic lifestyle. They come from the Yoga Sutras of Patangali and serve as principles for self discipline and moral conduct

The Yamas (Social ethics - Restraints)

The Yamas guide our interactions with the world and others. There are five:

  1. Ahimsa (Non-violence) - Practicing kindness and avoiding harm in thoughts, words, and actions.

  2. Satya (Truthfulness) - Speaking and living with honesty while being mindful of how truth is expressed.

  3. Asteya (Non-stealing) - Not taking what isn't freely given, including material things, time, or energy.

  4. Brahmacharya (Moderation) - Using energy wisely, often interpreted as self-control or mindful relationships.

  5. Aparigraha (Non-possessiveness) - Letting go of greed, attachment, and unnecessary possessions.

The Niyamas (Personal Ethics - Observances)

The Niyamas focus on self-discipline and inner development. There are five:

  1. Shaucha (Purity) - Keeping the body, mind, and surroundings clean and uncluttered.

  2. Santosha (Contentment) - Cultivating gratitude and acceptance of the present moment.

  3. Tapas (Discipline) - Developing inner strength through consistency in practice and effort.

  4. Svadhyaya (Self-study) - Studying scriptures, philosophy, and oneself for growth and understanding.

  5. Ishvarapranidhana (Surrender to a higher power) - Trusting in the flow of life and surrendering to the divine or a greater purpose.
